My research focuses on developing and implementing psychological and spiritual interventions. These interventions are designed to decrease symptoms of psycho-spiritual distress. We find that many patients seek support when feeling uncertain or bereaved - these emotions tend to impact one’s identity in unique and specific ways. We have found that patients who feel better equipped to process difficult emotions are less likely to experience symptoms of anxiety and depression. They are also more likely to thrive under conditions of extreme adversity, such as poverty. An important aspect of our research is fostering emotional well-being, including the deep sense that one belongs.
As a clinician, I provide contemplative care - this simply means the support I provide is informed by my training as a Zen/meditation practitioner and many years of providing trauma-informed therapy. I meet with patients individually as well as in support and/or therapy groups. I am grateful for the opportunity to come alongside those I serve: to listen, to understand, to appreciate. I support individuals of all faiths as well as those who do not identify as religious or spiritual. Our team also leads mindfulness-based retreats for patients living with cancer in the United States and United Kingdom on a bi-annual basis. If you are interested in learning more, please contact me.
